Are There Too Many Rappers?

2011.06.22

My addiction to hip-hop leads me to scour blogs and hip-hop news sites for new material on a daily basis like many of you.  Every day just like you I come across new content (music, videos, interviews, trailers) from new names pretty much every hour on the hour.  To be completely honest 80%-90% of which is totally disposable in my humble opinion (no O’Riley).  This on going frustration has led me to ask the following question: Are there too many rappers?

Advances in technology and an overall dumb-ing down of hip-hop have led to the oversaturation of the hip-hop marketplace.  In no way am I attempting to discourage anyone from following there dreams or materializing their passion for music but…….Its seems as though paying dues or establishing credibility just to have your name mentioned is totally a thing of the past.   Hip-Hop has always been a high volume genre in regards to new content and since hip-hop is the new get rich quick scheme the volume has gone into overdrive.

Again every hour on the hour my scouring brings me to discover 5-10 rappers that didn’t seem to exist a few hours prior.  Some good some decent but most become irrelevant by the next hour.  Not really sure if this is due to their lack of skills or my lack of attention span.  Full disclosure many times I may not give new rappers enough listens to actually  catch my attention but with so many how could any of us give enough listens.  So is it me or are there too many rappers out there to keep up with??????

  1. I have asked the same question time and time again. There are so many websites, blogs, events and venues you can’t keep up. It’s like at one time all rappers came in through the front door. Now they’re climbing through windows and sliding down the chimney and what-not. It’s not just saturation, it’s overkill.

  3. I swear there should be an movement about this topic… There should be a “please niccas stop rapping” petition. There used to be a day when rap was and art for which required skill i.e. KRS-1, Big Daddy Kane, Eric B and RAKIM, etc. Im going to make this the biggest priority oif 2012. To get these 1,000,000+ Digi 01-02/mbox rappers to give it up. Everybody i meet is a rapper or producer. Oh and i mean your average Rapper(Nursery Rhymes), Producer(Fruityloops) don’t even get me started on engineering their “music” I always get a HUH? or do you have a good engineer? The entire art form has been diluted down to either pop, or downright hilarious simple rhymes from people who have no idea what RAP music is. Remember, I said it here first. GAT_X Remem the name.. STOP RApping!!! There’s too many rappers!!
